The city of Volos which dates back only one and a half century but whose history and mythology is thousands of years old, is built �n the ruins of the ancient city of Iolkos home of Jason and the Argonauts. Its geographical position at the foot of Pelion Mountain and in the bay of the Pagasitic gulf renders it one of the most beautiful cities of Greece. Volos, a modern city with a population of 120.000 people, is developing into an important commercial and tourist centre of the country while the port is the gate of Europe to the Middle East.  It is the centre of the University of Thessaly, of the Volos city and District Theatre and the Music Theatre Foundation and it has intense intellectual and artistic movement. At a small distance from Volos are the archaeological sites of Dimini and Sesklo and the ancient theatre of Demetrias while among the most Important sights of the city it is worth mentioning the Archaeological Museum and the Town �all, a sample of the pelioritic architecture where the visitor Is impressed by the engravings by Tassos and a permanent exhibition of historical photographs of Volos.  

The Folklore Museum of Kitsos Makris and Theofilos, the Municipal Gallery of C. ��gia, the Municipal Conservatory, the art centre "Giorgio de Kiriko", the Papastratos building on the water front where the University of Thessaly is accommodated, as well as other buildings of the city, the Anavros park with sculptures by Greek and foreign artists, are of great interest. One can have a unique time in Volos in the taverns and cafes on the waterfront and in the famous "tsipouradika" (places that offer the local version of ouzo) with great seafood. Volos not far away from the picturesque villages of Pelion, the beautiful sandy beaches of the Pagasitic Gulf and Aegean Sea, and the islands of North Sporades can be the departure point for the "modern Argonauts".
